River Reflections

Phyl Kimball

As a young boy I warmly remember summer mornings watching the sun rise while fishing along the white sandy banks of the Cedar River. I spent hours staring intently at my floating cork anxiously waiting for it to disappear beneath the surface.

As years passed and my fishing skills increased I began pursuing the revered Largemouth Bass using plastic worms as my strategic lure of choice. I also enjoyed many days of wade fishing in the expansive stretches of Eel Grass shallows of the St Johns.

During the early nineteen-sixties Jacksonville's Cedar River was vividly alive with aquatic plants, fish and wildlife. Its cool clear waters looked like ice tea. Large expanses of white sand and towering Cypress trees lined its shoreline. The river was a destination point for large populations of schooling Shad, Mullet and Largemouth Bass.

Remembering the beauty of the river from my childhood, it remains my passion to restore the beautiful St Johns River to its former state of purity and health.

The good news is that NOW there is knowledge and new technology available that can be utilized to restore the St Johns and its tributaries to their original state of grandeur. We believe that our proposed plan of action will result in a rapid and dramatic recovery.

Let us begin TODAY in working together to achieve this worthwhile goal of restoring the rivers.

As CEO of CrystalStream Technologies, I have dedicated the last 10 years of my life to capturing and removing over 15 million pounds of material from our lakes, streams and rivers.  When Phyl Kimball approached me about bringing our technology to the “Restore the Rivers” project, the idea immediately became personal to me.

I grew up just a few miles from Phyl, on the Ribault River in Jacksonville, Florida.  I too experienced the bounty of the St. Johns River system, as it provided recreation and a lot more as I fished for fun, food, and ran crab traps as supplemental income for our family.

Today, all of those things are gone from the places I used to enjoy as a young man. We can put it back, and we will.  Restore the Rivers will do more than clean up the results of our neglect, it will attack the problem at the source.

This is a project we all can and should support.

I was born and raised in Florida, as was my mother and her father
before her. In our time here we have witnessed a steady decline in Florida's wetlands, and the rate of that decline is accelerating
exponentially.

Over the years I have been involved with various campaigns to stop the degradation, but none that actually could reverse the process. And that is why I am in full support of Phyl Kimball's plan to restore our state's waterways.

His clean-up efforts will remove chemical pesticides, herbicides and other residual pollutants from sediment collected through decades of abuse to our waterways.

Join me in support of this effort--it's time to do the right thing!
